The Three Great Mates by Levi, Ben, Marty, Noah and Blake

One wet Wednesday morning three great mates wanted a change. The three great mates lived near the Waikato River. Since the ETA had wiped out their homes their lives had changed a lot. Cruden the Crayfish had a girlprawn but when the ETA workers were clearing their homes she got taken away to The Prawn Park. Piri the Pukekho lived in a drain, but it dried up and the ETA workers put cement in it for the new road. Tony the tuatara was a road worker, one day he was trying to load cement into the cement mixer, but he was too slow that it dried up before he could finish. Kine the kiwi came out and shouted ANGRILY, “You were too slow and all the money we spent on the cement got wasted because of you! Get out of here YOU’RE FIRED!”

All the great mates decided that the ferns are much greener on the other side of the Huka falls bridge. Cruden the Crayfish decided he would cross because he wanted to get his girlprawn back. The only problem with crossing the bridge was that there was a ginormous Australian eel underneath. As he approached the bridge Quade the Quick Eel flicked out of the water and growled at Cruden, “Hey you! Nobody crosses this bridge unless they can score a try against me”. “Sweet as bro, she’ll be right”.

Quade was unaware that Cruden was a crayblack. Quade raced to the tryline but Cruden the crayfish nipped the ball off him and zoomed like a four wheeler to the tryline. “See ya bro, I’m off to save my girlprawn”. Quade slithered angrily back into the water.

Piri the Pukekho decided to the cross the bridge because he had heard about a pond where Paradise ducks lived. As he scampered to the bridge Quade splashed out in front of him. “Hey stickbird! Nobody crosses this bridge unless they can score a try against me”. “Too easy, mate” replied Piri. “This will be a piece of pavlova”, snarled Quade. Quade quickly wriggled towards the tryline but Piri used his feathers to tickle Quades gills which made him drop the flax ball. Piri swiped the ball up with his wing and skidded to the try line. “I’m no pavlova, see you later mate” and off went Piri.

Tony felt lonely and decided to cross the bridge to get a new job at Tuatara Century. As he slowly stomped to the bridge nobody appeared so he carried on. When we was halfway across Quade heard him thumping up above him. Quade was so exhausted because he had just had two games of rugby. Quade tried to jump up onto the bridge but the gates opened and the water flushed him away back to aussie. Tony slowly plonked across the bridge and saw his great mates and said, “Kia ora mates”. The three great mates lived happily ever after.

Week Four Achievement Award

This weeks achievement award for room 15 went to...

MARTYN

For always having a positive attitude and being a great helper to other students.

Marty is always one who others can count on for advice or further explaining of an activity. His positive attitude rubs off on those around him. Well done Marty, his award was presented at Team Tauhara assembly yesterday.

NZ Flags

We designed our own NZ flags which we think represent NZ better... Here are some examples of our art and concepts which we shared in assembly this week. Tariq and Aimee were the presenters and half the class explained why they chose the things they did to Team Tauhara.
Here is Levi showing off is Maori koru design...
Above is Meile-Rose sharing some possible concepts...
Above is Jacob showing off his rugby playing kiwi...
Here is a very proud Laura of her concepts...
Above is Kelliemarie at the final stage of her artwork!
Above are Aimee, Mackenzie and Kahlia working on their masterpieces!
Here you can see a lot of busy children creating some AMAZING pieces of art!

Aimee explaining our mihi

We made mihis to represent us. We learnt about the Maori language and our tribes, mountains and rivers. We learnt that our family is most important thing.

Hot Chocolates!

Here is a photo of Marty and Levi enjoying Milo last term when we did a language experience. The kids wrote their own description of the experience using metaphors, similes, alliterations etc. We have a great bunch of descriptive writers in room 15.

Hi all!
Just getting ready to head into the maths evening that starts at 7pm but I have a plea for the next week. If any parents are willing to help frame children's art work or possibly assist me in making a pavlova and some hokey pokey let me know!

We are having so much fun doing our inquiry and it is great to be learning so much about our country!

I also really want to get the kids creating some amazing artwork... I am not much of an artist I am sure the children will tell you! I am hoping a parent would love to assist me with this!

Let me know! You can text me 021941587
Ciao see some of you tonight.

Here is Holly sharing her mihi :)
Well done to all of those students who remembered to bring in their spelling lists. Those who brought them in are really improving each week.

Also well done to those people who have started recording their reading. I mentioned to the children, even if they have lost their green book a small notebook can be used similarly.

WEEK TWO INFO:

THANK YOU!
Thanks so much to those parents that have paid for both life education AND swimming! It makes my life much easier having such an organised class.

For those that haven't yet, just a reminder that Life Education is $4 and swimming lessons are only $2 for 9 lessons! This can be paid either to me, or at the office.

Well done to those students who have been taking home maths homework and testing out their skills! There is a massive folder in class that children are able to help themselves to. It would be great if every student was doing at least one a week.

This week we are moving into writing for entertainment/narrative writing which
means the childrens creativity really gets a chance to shine. We are focusing on NATIVE TO NZ for our inquiry this term so we are looking at a range of traditional tales that have been recreated with a kiwi twist. The children are going to have their own chance to recreate a tale with kiwi links.

The children are now doing ball skills with Mrs Moffitt which will be a great help for their winter sports!

For the first two weeks of this term we are focusing on understanding who we are, and that we are all different. This theme has been reflected in Life Education and also throughout class. This week, we have been writing our own mihis. The children will be practicing these, and for those who have given permission, as long as technology and the ipad allows I should be able to upload the videos! Some  children might like to also include their Iwi, Marae, Mountain and River more precisely to them as I have only stuck to basic Taupo ones. They might need some help in finding out this information.

The cold weather is well and truly here, although it warms up as the days go on. If you send your child to school with lots of clothes and wonder where they have gone, you might like to check our lost property box.

If you have any queries about your child or their progress please do not hesitate to contact me and make an appointment to meet.

Have a lovely week,
Holly.

Well done!
Even if your child has lost their green book. Reading can still be recorded in a notebook system and brought back on Friday! I can not stress how important home reading is!

Tuesday, 7 May 2013

Hello all,
Wow, what a busy few days we have had! On Monday our new member of room 15 started, his name is Jake and he is settling in well. Everyone is making him feel welcome. On Tuesday we had our first Life Education lesson with Miss Morrells friend Jude Sherning. The kids loved it, and we are learning about being different and being unique in our own way. This is transferring through into lots of our class work. Life Ed. is $4, thank you to those that have paid.

Homework is all set up ready, so this includes:
-Home readers
-Spelling (that the kids should have from last term, that needs to come back on Friday)
-Maths homework sheets

In week 5, we have swimming starting at the A.C.Baths. This has been subsidised by CONTACT and KIWISPORT MOE and it has a $2 fee per child.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE can I have permission from parents for photos of children on the blog as then I can upload photos and videos. Many have returned these but some haven't which means I am very limited to uploading photos!

Each day we have been doing brain teaser puzzles, ask the kids to test out your skills!!

Thanks!
I hope you are all having a great week.
Holly

Wednesday, 1 May 2013

Hello!
I hope you are all making the most of your time away from school! I am sure you are doing lots of fun things with your families. I have a couple of notices for you all:

-Please remember to bring back your portfolios, also if your parents want to discuss anything they are welcome to text me and make an appointment time on 021941587.

-Last term the amount of home reading was pretty dissapointing! You all need to be taking home books each week and preferably each night. Well done to those that did some reading, especially those who clocked 50 nights in their home reader books, WOW!

-I have set up a maths homework file where the home readers are kept. I would like you to be taking home some maths work each week. It is very important we keep practising. You can take home any sheet you like the look of, though you are limited to only taking one maximum home a night. Date it, complete it, and hand it in for marking to Miss Morrell.

Parents, if you could reinforce this that would be great! Homework is not compulsary, but children should be reading each week.

Ta, enjoy the rest of your holidays!
